MUSCLE INJURIES

MUSCLE INJURIES
What is a muscle injury?
A muscle injury, often called a “muscle strain,” happens when muscle fibres (and sometimes the associated tendon or musculotendinous junction) are overstretched or partly disrupted because the muscle is subjected to forces beyond its capacity.
Who gets them?
Muscle injuries are especially common in sports or activities that involve: rapid acceleration or deceleration (sprinting), sudden changes of direction, jumping/landing, stretching under load (e.g. kicking, high-kicks), or powerful contractions. Typical sports include football, rugby, sprinting, basketball, hockey, dancing or any activity requiring explosive or high-velocity movements.
Common symptoms
-
Sharp pain at the moment of injury, often in the muscle belly or where muscle meets tendon.
-
Weakness in the affected muscle, difficulty contracting or bearing load.
-
Swelling, bruising or muscle-cramp.
-
Reduced flexibility, stiffness, and limited range of motion, difficulty walking / running / performing sports actions if the injury affects lower limb muscles.
How physiotherapy can help
Physiotherapy supports recovery and return to activity by:
-
Applying early-stage care (rest, controlled loading, gentle mobilisation, guidance on recovery) to reduce pain.
-
Personalised structured rehabilitation programme combining gradually-progressed strengthening and sports specific rehabilitation tailored to the muscle and injury severity.
-
Gradually reintroducing sport-specific movements in a safe, progressive way, helping to restore strength, function, and reduce the risk of reinjury.
With individualised, evidence-informed rehabilitation, most muscle injuries heal very well. That’s why I tailor every rehab plan to you! using what I’ve learned from treating muscle injuries in multiple sports over many years. Physiotherapy with me helps you optimise recovery, minimise downtime, and get you back to your usual activities or sport stronger and safer.
