7.02.2010
Another month has passed by since my last diary update.
The months and weeks seem to go a lot slower without my bike to
keep me company! Since my last update I have
seen Neurology for a nerve conduction test on my right leg which
confirmed (to the doctors!) that there are obvious signs of
nerve damage affecting my right leg mainly in flexion, so tip
toeing/pushing off. It's most likely to
be coming from my Spinal nerves as it is running down the same
nerve pathway as the right leg hamstring and calf muscles.
The doctors still have not given me a firm diagnosis or any
clues as to my prognosis but they remain positive that certain
sensations have come back. Nerves take a long time to
repair so only time will tell.
In the last month I have been able to go swimming, which has had
a significant affect mentally on me as I have been able to
release my stored endorphins! Also, swimming seems to be the
only exercise I can do where I cannot feel the disability in my
right leg or pain in my back, which makes the experience an
enjoyable one.
One positive outcome to all this trauma is that my baking skills
have improved a lot over the last 5 months, thanks to the Hairy
Bikers TV programme and book! I thought the day would
never come when I would in fact enjoy watching a cooking show or
even order a recipe book! A lot of my friends have
benefited from my new found skills so it can't be that bad after
all.

It's 10 weeks now since I had spinal surgery. I have been
working hard with my Physio since my last update to try and get
my right leg muscles to work again and improve my walking.
This is proving to be a constant challenge at the moment but it
is keeping me busy at least.
I met with one of my surgeons last week to find out more
information about my problems since surgery. He went on to say
that they cannot yet explain what went wrong during surgery as
they did not expect anything to go wrong and the scans post
operation did not show any visible problems with my spinal
nerves/canal. The symptoms I have been having since
surgery were as if I had a spinal cord injury. This
obviously worried them as they did not touch my spinal cord.
So more tests were done with the spinal team and physios to see
how my symptoms have changed in the last 2 months to help my
surgeons understand the prognosis more clearly. They need
to do more tests to rule out some nerve problems in my right leg
out but it looks like I have Vascular Cauda Equina
syndrome which can happen (but is rare!) when performing spinal
surgery as the blood supply in my peripheral nerves has been
disrupted which can cause Cauda Equina syndrome.
Although it was good to finally meet up with my surgeon since
having surgery 10 weeks ago I was disappointed to hear
that they cannot explain fully (yet) why this happened to me as
they don't really understand it themselves yet. They cannot say
if I will make a full recovery as it can take up to 12 months
for the spinal nerves to repair so I should know if I will make
a full recovery by September 2010 (yes- I know!).
I am still having to take strong pain relief daily as the pain
in my back and leg is suffocating at times. My walking
gait has improved in the last month which I am happy about
but I still have a slight right sided limp as my right leg
muscles are not working properly but we are working hard to get
them back so watch this space!
To make things worse, Jez has badly sprained his ankle ripping
two ligaments! So he will be on crutches for a while.
At least it takes my mind of my own problems .
.

It
has been a long time since my last diary update but I had no
news to give up until I had Spinal Surgery almost 4 weeks ago.
My spinal surgery was done by a fantastic team at the RNOH hospital who are not only
brilliant surgeons but they also love riding bikes!
Unfortunately I had some complications after
surgery including having to remind my legs how to walk again as
my body shut down for almost two weeks after surgery and no,
this was not in the plan so yes it was very scary! but I
think the medication blurred a lot of these memories for me!
My surgeons are still not 100% sure why my body was
displaying symptoms similar to cauda equine syndrome as my MRI
scans showed no visible problems post op. Now,
only time will tell as my body has time to heal from the
surgery/ trauma.
I
am now back at home and after a week of mainly sleeping I have
started to build up the strength to do a few walks a day with
family and friends, or anyone I can find to take me as the days
are long without my previous routines. I am also
finding it quite funny being overtaken by very elderly people as
I am limited to very slow walking but I'll do anything
just to get back to normal again. I return to hospital of
Friday for physiotherapy to see what progress I have made and no
doubt I will be given a few metres extra of walking for the
week!
20.7.09
It
has been a while since my last update, mainly because I
don't really have much to write about in terms of race results
and race news as I am still unable to race due to spinal
complications since crashing in Montreal. The Shoulder joint
injury I also sustained in the same crash has started to heal
and feels a lot better now. The main
problem is in my spine unfortunately. Since crashing in
Montreal I started to feel chronic pain in my right leg and
lower back that gradually got worse and worse to the
point that I now have no sensation in my right Hamstring and
Lower gluteus muscles which is causing a "drop foot" reaction to
my Spinal nerve making it difficult to walk as I have lost all
ankle reflexes in my right ankle. I have already seen an
Orthopaedic Surgeon to talk about my options which I need to
think about seriously as Spinal surgery is not something I was
planning at this point in my cycling career!
Some other news is that I have decided to part with Team
ESGL-Gestion93. So, now I must focus on getting my
back better and staying well and fit.

Tour of Montreal 1st-4th June: A crash ends my Tour
we
had a day's rest after the World Cup before starting the tour of
Montreal. I have never done this tour before but looking
at the profile it looked to be a sprinters tour.
Cervelo won the leaders jerseys with Kirsten Wild wining the
sprint easily which seemed to be the theme for the rest of the
tour in the sprint finishes especially with her team controlling
most of the stages. We were working for Sophie in a few of
the stages as she is strong sprinter. She got a few top 10
places which was great. Christine also scored some
points in the QOM competition. My plan was to sit in for the
early stages of the tour and then use the last few stages to try
and get a result for the team. I wanted to save myself
for our next tour in PEI which is due to start 3 days
after this tour finishes. I came 5th on GC in the tour of
PEI last year which I wanted to improve on.
On day 4 we had a criterium in little Italy. It was a
tight circuit and fast but one I would normally like!
Unfortunately a rider ahead crashed which saw a few of us
behind crash and as I could not avoid the crash I went
over my handle bars and landed heavily onto my left shoulder.
The doctor fixed me up and got me to hospital as he thought I
may need surgery looking at my shoulder. After a few
x-rays it was great news to hear my collar bone was not broken
but the bad news was my AC joint had separated on impact which
is a lengthy recovery process and a painfully one.
Hopefully it will heal naturally without the aid of surgery but
only time will tell. I am currently back at home
recovering in st.albans. I cannot start physio until the
swelling has gone down and the pain has reduced but that part is
taking it's time, thankfully over the last few months I have
developed a good threshold for patience!
30th May
The
weather in Montreal has been very wet since arriving a few days
ago. Thankfully this morning I can see the sun trying to
make an appearance in the distance! I have never raced in
Montreal so the World Cup course is new to me. We rode
around the course yesterday to get a feel for the circuit.
The race is 11 laps of 10k each, with a 2k climb in each lap and
the roads are pretty rough in places. The hill kicked up
in the last 500 metres. Sophie and Christine had
raced her last year and assured me it was going to be hard!
So, the race got under way with Emma Pooley (Cervelo) attacking
in the first kilometre and taking a lead of 4 minutes over the
peloton which eventually was brought down to over a minute with
the likes of Nuernberger and High road chasing up front. The
peloton was whittled down to about 25 girls in the end with Emma
Pooley taking the win and Emma Johannson (Sweden) 2nd and Trixi
Worrack in 3rd. I stayed in the 1st group until the last 2 laps
when Nuernberger were putting in a lot of attacks, I tailed off
the pace with a few other girls. We kept it rolling
through for the next few laps and I finished in 29th place and
Joelle finished in 16th. I liked the course just needed to
hang in a few more laps! But it was a good result for the
team on a hard course. Next stop is the Montreal Tour that
starts tomorrow...............
27 May
I'm
back in Paris after finishing the Tour de l'Aude.
Claudia Hausler of Cervelo won her first major tour and Cervolo
team won the Overall team GC. Trixi Worrack was 2nd
and Marriane Vos in 3rd. Unfortunately I did
not have a great tour but I was pleased to finish. The
last few months of battling with the FFC took alot of my
fighting spirit away but I am sure it will come back again and
hopefully in time for Canada! We are flying out to
Montreal today for the Montreal World Cup and Montreal Tour.

15th April
After almost 4 months of waiting I have finally got my French
License signed meaning I can now start my racing season which
was due to start almost 2 months ago. I had
been suspended from racing by French doctors who had wrongly
diagnosed me with having a Heart condition that could of ended
my cycling career and life if they were to be believed.
It has been a very stressful 4 months firstly being told I had a
life threatening heart condition and secondly being told that I
had to stop racing straight away! My first priority was to
be seen by English specialist Cardiologist for a second,
third and fourth opinion which all came back Negative for having
dangerously long QT otherwise known as Sudden Death Syndrome.
It has been an extremely stressfully period not only for me but
for my whole family who have all helped to prove my Heart is in
fact super healthy! Thankfully after a lot of hard
work by Jez and my team Manager Jacques who have both
fought endlessly to get my racing license signed which has now
been done, so we can all move on and focus on racing.
Sophie Creux wins the 3rd round of the Coupe De France on Sunday
15th April!
28th March
Unfortunately since my last diary posting most of my time has
been taken up trying to sort out my French racing licence which
in essence should be a very easy thing to sort out especially as
I already have a British racing licence but this does not seem
to be the case in France.
My
first race with my team should have been at Het Volk back in
February but the French are dragging their heels in signing my
licence without any positive evidential reasons.
My
training is the only thing that is keeping me going at the
moment which I am still managing to focus well on despite not
knowing what if and when I will be allowed to race.
I am down to start the Tour of Flanders next weekend but this
does depend on the signing of my French racing licence so I hope
to be on the start line with my team soon instead of the
Men's races here in the UK!
18th February
I
am currently having an enforced rest due to injuring my lower
back whilst having too much fun in the snow on my cyclo cross
bike a few weeks ago. I should be back on track in a week
or so depending on how my rehabilitation goes this week.
So far it is all going to plan which is great news!

25th January
Since my last update I have been quite busy recovering from a
nasty Flu virus that my little Sister passed on to me at
Christmas time. It has taken me a good few
weeks to recover but thankfully we are back on track.
I travelled down to Dorset on Friday to my parents house in
Charmouth so I can do some different training rides and to see
my family before heading back out to France for the racing
season. I have only been down here for two days and
my poor legs feel like they have done 5 days of training thanks
to the coastal terrain, Fantastic!
I
have got a few trips scheduled for France in February including
a training camp with my team in the south of France that we're
all looking forward to.

Adventure Weekend in Chambery-France.

15th December It was really brilliant
to see Chris Hoy wining the Sports Personality of the Year award
last night. Also the GB Olympic cycling team wining
the team of the year award, it was a great night for
cycling awards.
My training has been running smoothly without too many
disruptions from the weather. I am looking forward to
flying out to France on Friday to meet up with all my team for
an adventure weekend. We haven't been told what is
happening over the weekend but one thing we know is that it is
going to be freezing cold in the south of France as it is
currently -14! I went out this week and
brought a few extra thermal warmers to get me through this
weekends activities! Maybe we're going cross country skiing?
That should be fun especially as I don't know how to ski!
5th December well, I have just
got back from Dorset where I have been staying with my parents.
My mum lives right by the Jurassic coast in Charmouth which is
very famous for it's fossils. It is also fantastic
for training with the beautiful country scenery that makes the
challenging terrain pleasant. One of my
favourite rides is heading out along the coast of Charmouth to
Lyme Regis then onto Beer and Sidmouth. I stop
in Sidmouth for a quick espresso before turning around and
heading home. Sometimes I stop off in Lyme Regis to take
in a few extra gasps of sea air before climbing up the last
climb back home.
I am joining my French team ESGL93-GSD-Gestion in Chambery on
the 19-22nd December for a "Team Bonding" adventure weekend.
I am not sure what we are doing but all will be revealed once we
arrive in Chambery.
Fisher Outdoor Leisure
sponsoring me in 2009 Fisher Outdoor
Leisure are one of the UK's biggest cycling importers and
distributors and they just so happen to be based where I live
in St.albans. They kindly helped me this year
supplying me with a LOOK585 race bike and many other items to
see me through the season. It was my first introduction to
Sram and I have to say having raced on both Shimano and
Campagnolo, Sram suits me best. More news to come on the
products that I will be using in 2009.
4th November
I have been in Dorset for the last ten days, training and dog
sitting for my mums dog Patch. My mum lives in a
little place close to the Coast of Charmouth called Whitechurch
Canonicorum. No matter what way I ride out of the house
the only way is up up and up. I got caught in a few
Hail stone showers that really hurt as the stones were really
big! I am now back at home in St.albans having
an easy training week that is very much welcomed right now.
Diary update 16th October
I cannot believe it, 4 weeks of
resting has flown by and I really enjoyed my rest but I am
also very happy to get back on the bike as I am starting to miss
training and the endorphins! I am back home now in
St.Albans which is really nice as I have time to catch up with
Jez and my family who live in Dorset who I rarely get to see
during the racing season. I started my
winter Base Training this week. Luckily the weather has
been good to me with glorious sunshine to keep me company.

5th September Well,
the cold I caught 2 weeks ago has just about gone now thankfully
and I am feeling more "human" as each day passes. The
weather has been atrocious since back at home in the UK.
Rain, rain and yes you guessed it more rain! This morning
I woke up got my cycling kit on and charged out the front door
to try and miss the rain that was due to hit by 10am.
Well my plan did not work as it started raining by 9.30 but I
didn't mind it so much as once I'm out and in the rain it's not
a problem. I leave for France on Sunday and I
hope the weather is a lot better there.
26th August - I arrived
back home at 1am this morning after a long journey back from
France. As soon as I finished Plouay World Cup my
body shut down as I caught a bad cold and my body is aching all
over. I will relax now at home and let my body recover
properly after crashing in RDF. I am still feeling
slightly dizzy since my crash so some time out would be a good
idea before I head back out to France for the Tour of Ardeche in
two weeks time.

6th August- After the tour of
Limousin I headed back home briefly before driving down to the
west country with Jez to see my mum. We stayed close to
Lyme regis and trained along the coastal line which is very
hilly with sea views to take ease the pain. After a
few days in Dorset we headed further west to Tintagel. We
stayed in a small cabin which was literally 4 steps from the
cliff edge with stunning views of the seas and coastal hill of
Cornwall. we did a few coastal rides towards Bude and
Boscastle with 4 20% climbs to get over each ride but again the
views made the pain more bearable.
I am back at home now for two days before heading out to France

12th July I
have been enjoying my last week at home before I fly out to

head to the Tour of Brittany and the tour of Limousin. I
am really hoping the weather is going to be dryer in
France as I am fed up with getting wet! I don't mind the
rain now and again but not everyday especially when I have
to do a long training ride in it! I have been
enjoying a few days off training this week which was very
welcoming so me and Jez have been enjoying some time together
before I head off to France. Another good thing
about rest days is you can watch the Tour de France for several
hours with your feet up!

I waited an hour of so and it passed on so I took a spin around
lap 2 of the race course for Saturday.
This morning the sun is shining strongly and it looks to be a
dry and bright morning so let's just hope it stays that way so I
can go for a ride around lap 1 of the course without getting

18th June - Took my new bike out

amazed at how responsive it felt whilst doing some hill sprints
and it handles lovely on the corners and descending much more
than my last bike which is a bonus! It is nice to be back at
home although the weather is not so welcoming at times, it's
nice to put my feet up after a packed month of racing I have
just done.

my bike away to fly back to the UK! I am not looking
forward to the flying part as I am actually quite scared of

to get here previously by plane. I arrive back in
London tomorrow afternoon and then head out to France on
Thursday with a few of the other girls who are racing Tour de

time to finish of my espresso and get out on my bike whilst the
sun is shining!
8th May I have
been taking it easy since Gila and recovering well. I rode
up to Jamestown yesterday which was a 35 min steady climb with a
lovely steam running along side it. I am returning back
the UK for a few day this Sunday to get ready for the Tour de
l'Aude with Team GB. The tour starts on the 16th-25th May
so I will have about 5 days to get back into the UK time zone.
I am really looking forward to the Tour and getting back into
Europe in "GB" colours.

8th April I needed to take a
few days of rest after coming back from Wisconsin which was a
good idea as the weather took a turn with some snow and rain in
Colorado. Today was a lovely sunny day but still a bit
fresh to get the legs out unfortunately! I was
expecting to feel a bit sluggish on my training ride today after
having a few days of rest so I did not plan anything too heavy
in training today. Well that was the plan until I found myself
at Jamestown where I started climbing from 16000 metres up to
24000 metres! I had heard a lot of people talking about a
climb called "Ward" and I was eager to find out what was so good
about this climb so when I saw the sign for Ward, well I had to
take a sneaky look! if you start the climb from
Jamestown it is around 15 miles long but I only did 10 of those
miles today as my head was starting to spin a bit at that point
so I turned around and hit the descent which was great fun!
I am due to race this weekend in a TT but my TT bike has not
arrived yet so I may well be doing it on my road bike but either
way it will be good training as it is a 17 mile rolling
course.
6th April We have just
got back from our team photo shoot in Wisconsin. We met up
with the rest of the team and Rebecca our team Manager and all
of her farm yard animals. The photo shoot was really
good and it was a chance to meet up with team sponsors.
We hope to get the pictures soon! Well I am back in
Boulder now and it looks like it has been snowing a bit last
night but the forecast seems to be perking up a bit later
and throughout the week. My training has been
going well and I have a few days of f now which is always nice
after a hard block. We are doing some races this
weekend in Boulder but the main focus is preparing for Gila and
Mt.Hood at the end of April-beginning of May.

28th March - Tour or Arizona-Tucson Stage race.....

27th March We arrived in Tucson Arizona yesterday
evening after a long drive from Colorado. We took a ride
to the TT course yesterday which is about 20 mins from where we
are staying in Tucson. The landscape is stunning with lots
of cacti and other desert plants and animals! The TT
course is 3 miles straight up a rolling hill which has a tougher
mid section to get over before hitting the top. After finishing
our ride we sat and had some lunch and Carrie accidentally got
too close to a Cacti bush and it pounced on her foot and would
not come out! Luckily Dr.Kate came to the rescue with some
pliers and pulled it out which looked very painful for Carrie!
Thankfully Carrie was okay after but we all learnt a lesson to
stay away from any cacti bushes!.
When we finished riding the TT circuit we headed out to the
course for tomorrow to see what the loop was like in terms of
gradients etc. It looks like a
good circuit, one to try and get a small group away on if
possible as one section is very rolling which should tire some
legs out come the second time around. I
managed to get a little burnt yesterday (sunscreen would be a
good idea Leda!) just on my arms as they have not seen the
sunshine since being in Italy last year!
25th March It has taken a week
for me to actually feel partially "Normal" meaning I don't
feel so dizzy or like I am floating all the time!
Must be adjusting to the altitude slowly which is a good sign.
I am also waking up at a more respectable time which is also
refreshing! We are heading out to Tucson in
Arizona early tomorrow morning for a 3 day stage race
starting on Friday. I've been informed that is will be hot
in Tucson which is why the organisers have planned to start the
stages at 6.45am in the morning! Thankfully I'm used to getting
up early so should be fine after a strong espresso or two!

21st March My Trek racing bike
arrived safely and it is a joy to ride. It is fitted out
with the latest Sram 10 speed system and it is so light
and responsive! The team bike is white with some pink in
it to match our kit of course!
I have not adjusted to the time change yet as I keep waking up
at about 5am but that is slowly moving to 6am so I should be on
American timing within 5 more days or so, hopefully!
Still feel a bit like I am floating on air and slightly dizzy
due to the altitude but that should pass soon. I
have not done anything structured in training this week as
I have needed to adjust to the new time zone and altitude here.
We are scheduled to race tomorrow and Sunday in some local
criterium in Boulder area so we can practice team tactics for
the bigger races coming up soon. I am hoping my legs will
be feeling better as they have felt very heavy since arriving in
America!
20th March I arrived safely in Denver on Monday
evening minus
my track bike bag with my laptop and other goodies! For some
reason my bike bag never even left Gatwick but I was soon
re-united with it 2 days later thankfully! I hooked up
with 2 of my team mates, Claire who I am staying with and Carrie
who lives close by in Boulder. We headed out to get some food in
a local restaurant which was good as I was starving after
travelling for 15 hours.
!We went for a spin the next day but as my bike was not
arriving until Wednesday I borrowed Carri''s Trek bike .
I was amazed at how responsive the Trek WSD Madone was! It is
beautiful to ride and so light! I was looking forward to getting
my bike no doubt about that!
I went out
training with Claire who is Australian and is a really cool
chick! She showed me the local routes and a few of the
Mountains including Jamestown which is
about a 12 mile climb, thankfully we only did about 6 miles as I
was suffering from altitude dizziness! The Mountain
range was stunning with bits of snow still covering the trees
and ground, Although it did not feel really warm I
got slightly burnt as it is so dry here so must remember to
put some sun block on as my lips were really sore after the
ride!
It
has been really windy but pleasantly sunny with the temperatures
around 60 degrees or so. I am told it will start warming
up in the next 3 weeks which will be nice!
15th March I am still feeling
a bit "coldy" but I have been able to do some training the last
few days which is good news. I have been doing some
strength work instead of heavy threshold work this week as I
really don't feel up to threshold yet! I enjoy my strength
sessions on the bike and it doesn't leave you feeling
totally knackered afterwards which is good for me right now!
I am packing my bags ready for Mondays off to Denver which is an
early flight at 8.30am! Espresso will be important on Monday I
am feeling! I am getting more excited each day
and cannot wait to get there! I was planning to race
this weekend but the cold has set me back so I will be doing
some training instead.
12th March I felt a cold
brewing up yesterday but thought I would be lucky enough to see it
off! Unfortunately this was not the case. I
thought an hour on the road would be good to clear my head
a bit but I turned around after 15mins and headed back home as
there was no point being out today as I just felt rubbish. I took the opportunity
to tidy up lots of paperwork before I head out to America on
Monday, one of those jobs you never get around to unless you
really are bored and have nothing else to do! Tomorrow I
am hoping to feel a bit better but if not there are plenty more
things I can do here!
